The Power of Modularity in Gaining a Competitive Edge

August 28, 2024

To excel in today’s fiercely competitive global market, OEMs face major hurdles according to top analysts (such as S&P Global Mobility, PwC, and others). They must get new vehicles to market faster, cut costs, deliver the right mix of BEV-ICE-hybrid for each market and still find a way to roll-out innovative, attention-grabbing technologies that boost the driver’s experience and vehicle performance.

And let’s not forget about keeping it affordable as consumers determine OEM winners based on great vehicle performance at a great price.

So, what’s the key to navigating this tricky landscape? MODULARITY.

Modular Innovations: Fast, Flexible, Scalable, Uncompromising Steering Performance

At Nexteer, we’re addressing these challenges through a complete portfolio of modular steering systems that support all vehicle types, segments and even unique needs across global markets.

Modular electric power steering (EPS) leverages our existing, EPS building blocks so we can deliver fast, flexible, scalable, cost-effective, high-performance steering solutions that also meet OEMs’ wide-ranging performance needs… all without compromising on the most critical connection between the driver and vehicle.

A Complete Portfolio of Modular Steering Systems

Our most recent addition to our modular steering portfolio is the Modular Pinion-Assist Electric Power Steering (mPEPS) system, including both Single-Pinion and Dual-Pinion systems. These pinion-assist systems address some of the most popular vehicle segments around the world, with Single-Pinion commonly used in compact to mid-size vehicles and Dual-Pinion for large cars, SUVs and trucks.

In addition to mPEPS, Nexteer’s portfolio of modular EPS systems includes:

  • Modular Column-Assist EPS (mCEPS)Introduced in 2021, mCEPS creates new possibilities for vehicle types that have used traditional CEPS systems in the past, including small and compact vehicles.
  • Modular Rack-Assist EPS (mREPS)Introduced in 2023, mREPS enables responsive steering via custom-developed, high-performance torque and position sensors for heavier vehicles, such as EVs, light commercial vehicles and others.

In addition to Modular EPS systems, Nexteer offers a complete portfolio of EPS systems that can steer vehicles of all sizes – from small cars to heavy-duty trucks and light commercial vehicles.

Modular Power Packs Deliver Additional Flexibility

In addition to EPS systems, our Modular Power Packs (MPP) deliver an additional level of flexibility and efficiency in steering system packaging, sizing and technical content. Nexteer’s Full Cylindrical and Flexible Single-Board MPPs provide common building blocks for OEMs seeking optimization and packaging efficiency for specific vehicle platforms.

Beyond these benefits, MPPs also enable advanced safety and performance for all levels of driver assist features, including up to hands-off, automated driving.

Our suite of modular steering innovations is a perfectly timed game-changer.  Through fast, affordable and scalable technologies, we help our OEM customers stand-out with high-performance steering that delivers excitement, reliability and safety.  Modular innovation that uses existing, advanced building blocks is the key to unlocking a competitive edge and thrilling drivers in today’s competitive market.
