Hands-Off Detection

Hands-Off Detection (HOD) – also known as “Hands-On Detection” – is a technology for vehicles equipped with advanced driver assistance & semi-autonomous features. The solution plays a critical role in enhancing vehicle safety by monitoring when a driver’s hands are off the steering wheel and sends alerts if the driver remains disengaged for a specified time, per OEM requirements.

Nexteer’s HOD offers precise monitoring for all vehicle types with SAE Levels 2+ and is in accordance with the UN-R79 Lane Keep Assist Hands-off regulation. As a proven, industry leader in Electric Power Steering (EPS) and Steer-by-Wire (SbW) systems, our HOD technology is already deployed in semi-autonomous vehicles on the road today.

  • Enhances Safety, Supports Driver Assist & Autonomous Driving Functions: Uses a combination of existing vehicle sensors, algorithms, and models to analyze data and steering inputs to determine whether the driver’s hands are actively engaged with the steering wheel.
  • Precise, Accurate Measurement: Efficiently filters out road disturbances to prevent false positives (mistakenly indicating that the drivers’ hands are on the steering wheel) and false negatives – increasing drivers’ confidence in the vehicle control system.
  • Driver Torque Observer: Identifies input torque generated from the driver as opposed to inertial effects from lateral motion for more accurate & precise monitoring.
  • Hardware Independence: HOD software can reside on an existing DCU, separate from EPS/SbW hardware, and works with existing hardware (e.g., camera & steering wheels with or without sensors)
